EMPOWER AFRICA WITH YOGA: Below is the executive summary of the business plan for the Haum of Yoga expansion project. We are really excited to launch this project this year, bringing yoga to the people. I realised that reaching the immediate community I have been reaching and am greatful for, is just the beginning. This community and others like it, can have a larger impact on the South African community as a whole. The Haum of Yoga is set to launch 5 new yoga studios in the townships in Johannesburg South Africa, an ashram and an orphanage. Help build a network of Yoga studios through South Africa that will each promote four key principles within their local communities – education; empowerment; community upliftment and building bridges – and become part of a larger yoga network across cultures and income brackets that will support and facilitate the yoga journeys of the greater South African community. Become a part of this african yoga community: endorse a studio, participate, or donate:
HAUM OF YOGA 5TH BIRTHDAY FUNDRAISER
On 1 September 2004, I opened the Haum of Yoga at 3 Quartz Road with our first class. We had 8 students in that class. The road from there has been a bumpy one, often times with no students or only 1 or 2 attending a class. And how we have grown! (hard to believe in winter, but I know all you loyal yoga students are out there somewhere ready to start up again when the sun shines hotter). What a journey. It has been for me a huge lesson in letting go, in trusting and in persevering. I think I could have thrown in the towel a hundred times over the past 5 years but each time when I allowed myself those thoughts, and entertained ‘what else’, the answer was always the same: there is nothing I would rather be doing – despite the fact that teaching scares me every day, despite the fact that getting on my mat pushes my boundaries mentally and emotionally every time, there is nothing I would rather be doing. So please join me in celebrating 5 years of perseverance, 5 years of community that I feel with all of you, 5 years of yoga at 3 Quartz. August 30th, Sunday 108 Sunday Salutes: sponsor yourself or someone else to achieve this milestone… 10.30am – 12.30pm It is through you, our extended family, that Haum of Yoga has been able to continue to share yoga, hopefully inspire and evoke change! The teachers at Haum of Yoga will be guiding you through 108 sun salutes, slowly, carefully or for a challenge – without stopping (the greatest mind game yet). YES! You can do it! Perhaps this is a great way to earmark your success with yoga. We invite you to celebrate in all that you have received through yoga by joining us for 108 Sunday salutes. Please help us raise sponsorship for our TOWNSHIP PROJECT! Details can be sent to you or are on our website. The business plan is available if you wish to see it. If you are not attending, please consider making a donation, small or large. The 108 sunday salutes will be done over 2 hours: Join the tortoise or the hare group to take you through the count, or count your own 108 sun salutes (no cheating!). EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Vision: ‘Communal spiritual living for a better South Africa’. We aim to create a network of yoga centres throughout South Africa which will each promote 4 key principles: Education; Empowerment; Community; and Building Bridges. The first successful yoga studio has been operational in Fourways since 2004.
Education: The primary education of The Centres will be yoga, meditation and spiritual living. Secondary education will be created to suit the immediate community needs to include business management, financial planning, and various adult education skills. The Ashram/s will be a unique centre in that it will also operate an adjacent orphanage with an alternative school intended to develop the future leaders of South Africa, with a strong moral code. The Haum of Yoga Fourways has been and will continue to run the internationally accredited Teacher Training courses which will train the teachers for The Centres.
Empowerment: Through the yoga and meditation, a greater sense of well-being and self empowerment is experienced by most practitioners, in a reasonably short time. Further, the focus on empowerment will include teaching teachers in the communities, not only to teach yoga but to run and maintain a yoga studio. The Centres will provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs with a spiritual focus to become involved in sustainable community project. The enterprise development opportunities are vast and include cleaning services, catering services, seamstress services for The Centres, the shop, restaurant and Ashram/s and tourism to The Centres.
Community Upliftment: Each community based yoga centre will become a place of learning for the adult community (e.g. financial literacy, sewing courses, entrepreneur courses, HIV education, sex education.) based on the needs identified by the teachers, managers and team involved in each centre. The opportunities for reaching the community through pamphlets, talks, greater community involvement – word of mouth - are without limit.
Building bridges: All of The Centres will be inter-connected with involvement across centres encouraged and promoted. Projects of The Centres will aim to connect and build bridges across communities through sharing of skills, resources, and or time through the student base. Awareness campaigns and opportunities will be created. Strengths and spiritual consciousness across communities will be shared. The international community will be invited to participate through teacher workshops and tourism in the areas.
